What's a Radical Faery?

What's A Radical Faery, you ask.

I have several answers, myself, to this question: and one of my favorite things about our community is that we'd each answer that question differently. Ask 10 RFs the question, and get at least a dozen answers.

Here are some of my favorites:

  • Real people like the characters in a Fellini movie, but nice.
  • Some of the ones your mom warned you about, but we won't bite unless asked real nice.
  • Queer Hippie
  • Queer Pagan
  • Those for whom loving as we do, in concious, self constructed and non-mainstream ways, is a spiritual gift that informs how we walk our walk and dance our dance.
  • Radical from the dual meanings of political radical,
    • a la 70s Radical faggot movement and other leftist and anarchist insprirations
    • Radical as "root", returning the our tradtional roles as the spritual people and healers posited by Arthur Evans in his early writings (Witchcraft and the Gay Counterculture) and Harry Hay.
  • Faery with the aspects of
    • Reclaiming the eptithet many of us were called for gay/queer/homo.
    • Referencing the connection many have to the northern European 'little people', the magical ones of forest and field.
    • These are but a few meanings...what are yours?
